Sarasota County freezes hyperscale data center applications

County commissioners voted unanimously to stop accepting, reviewing, or approving hyperscale data center proposals for a year, citing electricity and water demand.

In early July 2026 the Sarasota County Commission voted 5-0 to pause acceptance, review, and approval of hyperscale data center applications for twelve months, into at least July 2027. The move followed interest from a developer in a property on Cattlemen Road.
