FERC orders grid operators to justify large-load rules

Federal regulators told all six regional grid operators to defend or rewrite the tariffs that govern how data centers and other large loads connect to the transmission system.

On June 18, 2026, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued show cause orders under Section 206 of the Federal Power Act to all six regional transmission organizations and independent system operators, along with their transmission owners, over the rules for interconnecting large and co-located loads.
