Canada still lacks a comprehensive federal AI law after AIDA

Bill C-27 and its Artificial Intelligence and Data Act proposal died on the Order Paper in 2025, leaving Canada with sectoral and provincial rules rather than a comprehensive federal statute.

Bill C-27, which contained the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, died on the Order Paper when Parliament was prorogued January 6, 2025. As of mid-2026, no comprehensive replacement federal AI statute has been enacted, leaving organizations to navigate PIPEDA, provincial laws including Quebec Law 25, and voluntary codes.
